The Settlers of Catan

Summer 2011

Settler Points Build Points VP Road Army Dev Cards
Angelo (1st) 10 7 1 6 6 3: 1 YoP, 2 RB
Ken (2nd ) 8 8 0 3 1 0
Kai (3rd) 8 5 1 8 2 0
Angelo wins with a dev-card strategy by putting his second build on an 8/10/water intersection. The gamble paid off, as he ended up buying 10 dev cards. What a genius. Or, a d-bag? Kai beats Ken for longest road. Must've been a lot of 8s. [Jun 29, 2011]

Angelo (2nd) 11 8 1 6 5 3: 2 YoP, 1 Mono
Ken (1st ) 8 5 3 8 2 1: Mono
Kai (3rd) 6 4 0 9 5 2: 2 RB
Dev card bonhanza! Cards for all! We average over 7 cards per person. Angelo plays his 5th soldier before Kai can play his, taking Largest Army for the win. Not only that, but he gloats about getting 11 points. What a d-bag! Ken's first two dev cards are victory points. If this is not bad enough, he is accused of sitting on soldier cards for most of the game. [Jun 30, 2011]

Ken (1st) 11 9 0 5 4 0
Kai (3rd ) 7 5 0 9 1 0
Angelo (2nd) 4 4 0 5 3 2: YoP, Mon
Angelo and Kai team up on Ken for Longest Road. Kai is content to build the road, but does not realize he is being used like some kind of mule-like tool by Angelo. Ken switches it up and builds the Largest Army in the final rounds to win. Kai and Angelo are bickering before the first roll has been made, and in the end, everyone blames each other for allowing the game's outcome -- brutal domination -- to happen. [Jul 5, 2011]

Kai (1st ) 8 7 1 11 3 4: 2 RB, YoP, Mon
Ken (3rd) 7 7 0 12 0 0
Epic road-building battle, and one of those matches where everyone's on the verge of winning near the end. Kai draws a third Soldier card too late, as on the next turn Angelo is able to take Longest Road to move to 10 points. As the match went on, there was a lot of finger-pointing to identify the leader. Feelings were hurt as both false and accurate accusations flew. [Jul 7, 2011]

Ken (2nd) 10 7 1 2 3 1: YoP
Kai (3rd ) 9 8 1 2 2 0
Angelo (1st) 9 7 0 5 2 0
Look at the scores! Although there were good intersections for all, Angelo had no clay, Ken had no wood, and Kai had all resources but on duplicate numbers. Luckily, he hits those numbers and charges to an early lead. Angelo fights back, blocks Kai from building a settlement (a game winning one, turns out), then gets to Longest Road to hit 9 points. Ken builds a city, deploys Largest Army, and reveals a Victory Point to sneak in for the win. [Jul 11/11]

Ken (1st) 10 6 2 2 5 1: Mon
Angelo (2nd) 9 9 0 4 0 0
Kai (3rd) 8 5 1 11 5 0
Kai starts with a bang, but hits a wall when he runs out of settlements. This does not stop him from making sure NO ONE will build a longer road! Angelo for once buys no dev cards, but builds out to an impressive 9 settlement points. Ken edges out Kai for Largest Army and Victory Points. Kai and Angelo bicker about placements before the turn order is even determined. Why don't these two guys just get a room? [Jul 12/11]

Ken (3rd) 10 9 1 2 2 1: Mon
Angelo (1st) 7 7 0 7 0 0
Kai (2nd) 7 5 0 9 0 0
Kai enters, as Angelo puts it, "road-building purgatory" in order to protect his Longest Road. He's unable to get the city he needs, and Angelo is unable to get the 10-roll he needs to take the road to get to 9 points. Ken slowly builds up a wheat-building infrastructure to 2-for-1 his way to a win. The outcome of rolls and non-rolls was very clear in this game. [Jul 13/11]

Ken was too bitter, and commissioned Angelo to provide a guest summary. Unfortunately, Angelo's room-tilting arrogance produced a novella far too long for this space. Ken's attempts to reduce the original text by 60% could not be done without destroying its narcissistic essence. The full summary can be found here (sorry: open link in new tab). [Jul 14/11]

Angelo, starting last, picks for a dev-card strategy. Not surprisingly, he buys 9 dev cards. Surprisingly, none of them are Victory Points. Kai surprisingly ends up buying 5 dev cards. Ken does not buy a single dev card, but surprisingly wins. The game ends with Ken stealing a win-enabling sheep from Angelo. Angelo, holding 3 sheep in a hand of 4, declares that Ken is a "complete douche" if he does not pick correctly. [Jul 19, 2011]

KAI WINS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 2011! GUESS WHO'S BACK? BACK AGAIN? KAIBAR'S BACK! TELL A FRIEND! GUESS WHO'S BACK... Guess who's back... Guess who's back... Guess who's back... guess who's back... [Jul 22, 2011]

Angelo (1st) 10 7 1 7 1 0
Kai (2nd) 6 6 0 4 1 0
Ken (3rd) 5 5 0 6 1 0
Kai's initial settlement's build direction is challenged by Ken's (see bottom); Kai places his second settlement on the 6/9/2 to get a road to beat him. Taking advantage, Angelo places his second settlement to challenge Kai (see top-left). On his turn, Kai rolls a 2 to get a second wood, and beats the both of them! Angelo ends up winning. Kai responds by spilling water on the table. Luckily, only sheep cards got wet. [Aug 5, 2011]

Fall 2011

Settler Points Build Points VP Road Army Dev Cards
Kai (1st) 10 9 1 4 1 2: YoP, RB
Ken (2nd) 9 7 0 9 1 0
Angelo (3rd) 7 6 1 8 0 0
After a very long break from Settlers, Kai forgets how poorly he had been performing, and power-builds his way to an ore-and-wheat victory. Seeing the writing on the wall earlier on, Ken tries to save face through expansion for points, and comes close. Angelo takes the opposite approach to Kai, but falls short in every category except Rage. [Oct 27, 2011]
